Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt Read-Along Day One

How the Read-Along Works

Each day we will read a section of the book Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman together.  After reading each section, please feel free to comment, and add your thoughts about the book.  The more input, the better this works!  Comment as little or as much as you want, and feel free to stray from the discussion starters if you have something else about the book you really want to discuss.  Most importantly, have fun as we read this book together!

Read-Along Day1:  Chapters 1 and 2 pgs. 1-26

Welcome to our first day of reading and thank you for joining us!  I hope you enjoy yourself as we read Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman.  In the first two chapters we are introduced to CeeCee, her mother, Mrs. Odell and even CeeCee's father.  The first two chapters offer us a bit of a flashback so we can see the situation in CeeCee's home.

Discussion Starters:
  1. What do you think of CeeCee?
  2. What is CeeCee’s relationship like with her mother, Camille? How does her mother see Ceecee? In the second chapter, CeeCee asks her mother “What’s my name?” and Camille has a flicker of reality.  What does that tell you about their relationship?
  3. CeeCee’s only experience with church is radio services with Mrs. Odell, until the day she visited a Saturday fund raising festival.  What did you think of CeeCee’s adaptation of the prayer that she observed in the church?
  4. CeeCee's father is a northerner, and much older than her mother. Does this explain his behavior?
  5. CeeCee escapes the realities of her mother's illness by immersing herself in the pages of her books.  I have spoken with many people who use books as "comfort reads" to escape for a little while.  What do you do when you need a break from life's stresses?  Do you have any "comfort reads?"  What are some of your "comfort reads?"
  6. What were some of the books that you loved as a child ?  Did you read any of the same books CeeCee mentioned?
Other comments on this section...

For tomorrow we will be reading Chapters 3-4 pgs. 27-44

***Please note that page numbers come from the paperback version of the book.  Other versions may have different page numbers.

HOWARD COUNTY READS 2012 BOOK CHOSEN!

Saving CeeCee Honeycutt

You nominated your favorite books and a committee reviewed those books and chose Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman as the book for Howard County Reads 2012.

For years, 12-year-old CeeCee Honeycutt has taken care of her mother, Camille, a crown-wearing laughingstock who thinks it’s 1951 and she’s Vidalia Onion Queen of Georgia. When tragedy strikes in their Ohio town, CeeCee is whisked off to Savannah, Ga., by her great-aunt Tootie Caldwell. CeeCee is soon catapulted into a world of prosperity and Southern eccentricities. CeeCee’s world view is challenged with secrets to keep, injustices to face, and loyalties to uphold. Just as she begins to feel like she belongs, her newfound joy collides with the long-held fear that her mother’s legacy has left her destined for destruction.

Several events are planned to celebrate Howard County Reads 2012, including author Beth Hoffman visiting Kokomo.
