Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt Read-Along Day One

How the Read-Along Works

Each day we will read a section of the book Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman together.  After reading each section, please feel free to comment, and add your thoughts about the book.  The more input, the better this works!  Comment as little or as much as you want, and feel free to stray from the discussion starters if you have something else about the book you really want to discuss.  Most importantly, have fun as we read this book together!

Read-Along Day1:  Chapters 1 and 2 pgs. 1-26

Welcome to our first day of reading and thank you for joining us!  I hope you enjoy yourself as we read Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman.  In the first two chapters we are introduced to CeeCee, her mother, Mrs. Odell and even CeeCee's father.  The first two chapters offer us a bit of a flashback so we can see the situation in CeeCee's home.

Discussion Starters:
  1. What do you think of CeeCee?
  2. What is CeeCee’s relationship like with her mother, Camille? How does her mother see Ceecee? In the second chapter, CeeCee asks her mother “What’s my name?” and Camille has a flicker of reality.  What does that tell you about their relationship?
  3. CeeCee’s only experience with church is radio services with Mrs. Odell, until the day she visited a Saturday fund raising festival.  What did you think of CeeCee’s adaptation of the prayer that she observed in the church?
  4. CeeCee's father is a northerner, and much older than her mother. Does this explain his behavior?
  5. CeeCee escapes the realities of her mother's illness by immersing herself in the pages of her books.  I have spoken with many people who use books as "comfort reads" to escape for a little while.  What do you do when you need a break from life's stresses?  Do you have any "comfort reads?"  What are some of your "comfort reads?"
  6. What were some of the books that you loved as a child ?  Did you read any of the same books CeeCee mentioned?
Other comments on this section...

For tomorrow we will be reading Chapters 3-4 pgs. 27-44
